A police horse was struck during a large fight that broke out on streets crowded with late-night bar patrons in downtown Santa Ana on Sunday, according to police.
The altercation began at around 2 a.m. as bars were closing on 3rd and Broadway and hundreds of people filled the streets. Police say they are not sure what prompted the fight.
A Santa Ana Police mounted unit spotted the fight and called for backup. A police horse named Chex was punched or slapped during the altercation. Chex was “unfazed” and continued working at the scene, police said.
The person who allegedly struck the horse was arrested for committing an unlawful act against a police animal. Five other people were also arrested on charges including public drunkenness and resisting arrest, police said.
